On Wednesday, April 24, we concluded our 2023 mobilization campaign, Stand for the Land, by handing over to Her Excellency Beatriz Valle, Ambassador of Honduras to Canada, our solidarity letter signed by 52,629 Canadians.
A delegation of Development and Peace — Caritas Canada members and staff met the ambassador, who said she was “touched by the solidarity expressed by the Canadian population towards the community of Guapinol, which is so far away.”
She promised to pass on the message to her Minister of Foreign Affairs and to ask people in the Honduran Congress to take up the Guapinol case with the government.
Thanks to the mobilization of our members across Canada, we exceeded our initial goal of 32,000 signatures (1,000 for each of the 32 people charged at the Guapinol camp) by over 20,000!
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your commitment and solidarity with the communities of Guapinol and the San Pedro sector.
To bring the campaign to a close, we gathered testimonials from delegates who delivered signatures to the Honduran ambassador to Canada; from Elvin Hernández, of our partner organization, ERIC-Radio Progreso; and from members of the Guapinol community.
Take a look back at this climactic moment of our campaign.
