Who we are

At a glance

Development and Peace — Caritas Canada, the official international development organization of the Catholic Church in Canada, is a democratic movement for global solidarity rooted in Catholic Social Teaching.

We are the Canadian member of Caritas Internationalis, a global confederation of over 160 Catholic organizations around the world.

We have over 12,500 members across Canada who are at the heart of our democratic movement.

Mission

Development and Peace – Caritas Canada addresses the root causes of poverty, oppression, and inequality by working with partners in the Global South and by mobilizing Canadians in the common struggle for justice and dignity.

We champion women and social movements as key agents of lasting change.

A Two-Fold Mission:

Raising awareness, advocacy and action
in Canada

Vision

Our human family living on a healthy planet in dignity, solidarity, justice, and peace.

Values

These five values are at the heart of who we are and what we do.

We will courageously live and promote these values in all aspects of our work :

Icône dignité

Dignity

We believe in the inherent dignity of the human person, as created in the image and likeness of God.

We work for Integral Human Development, which is concerned with the social, economic, political, and ecological wellbeing of each person.

Participation icon

Participation

We believe all persons are entitled to participate in community and in decisions that affect their lives.

We encourage and enable people to be protagonists – active players in creating a world where all can thrive.

Icône intégrité

Integrity

We believe we are accountable to those who place their confidence in us to accomplish our mission: our members, local communities, partners, donors, and institutional funders.

We manage the resources entrusted to us with transparency, sharing our learnings and our successes.

THE PREFERENTIAL OPTION FOR THE POOR icon

THE PREFERENTIAL OPTION
FOR THE POOR

We believe those who have been impoverished by unjust systems are powerful actors for social change.

We listen to, amplify, and join their voices.

We prioritize the needs of the most vulnerable and marginalized as we pursue the common good so that no one is left out.

Solidarity icon

Solidarity

We believe in the interconnection and interdependence of the whole human family.

We walk side-by-side with all who struggle for justice, taking up our cause together.

We share the joys and hopes, griefs and anxieties of the women and men of our time, and in particular those who are impoverished and marginalized by unjust systems, as we think and act in the spirit of community.

Strategic plan

2023-2028

Discover our priorities and strategies for growth over the next five years (2023-2028).

History

Development and Peace – Caritas Canada was established in 1967 by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops in response to Pope Paul VI’s call to Catholics living in developed nations “to be in the first ranks of those who spare no effort to have just and fair laws, based on moral precepts, established among all nations.” (Populorum Progressio, 81).

Development, the new name for Peace.

Peace cannot be seen simply as the absence of war. It must be built daily, and it must strive towards a more perfect justice among human beings (Populorum Progressio, 76). That founding principle of Development and Peace is still maintained today.

Governance

Development and Peace – Caritas Canada is a movement of over 12,500 members who are part of a global community committed to achieving justice and equity for all.

By participating in the democratic life of Development and Peace, our members influence the direction, the composition, and the activities of the organization.

Our members come together in local groups, diocesan councils and regional assemblies.

The National Council, composed of 15 directors elected by the grassroots membership, is the main decision-making body of Development and Peace – Caritas Canada.

These 15 directors are volunteers, with a profile of expertise and experience established by the Board, which allows them to successfully fulfill their role.
