Watch live the event The Synod on the Amazon: Canada and Latin America Working Together

On Tuesday, November 12, 2019, Development and Peace — Caritas Canada is co-sponsoring the event The Synod on the Amazon: Canada and Latin America Working Together featuring Cardinal Pedro Barreto, SJ, Archbishop of Huancayo, Peru, and one of the delegate presidents of the synod. The event, which is being organized by the Centre Oblat – A Voice for Justice and Saint Paul University in Ottawa, will also feature as panelists:

  • Heather Eaton, who is a Full Professor at Saint Paul University and holds an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in ecology, feminism and theology.
  • Kelly Di Domenico, who is Director of Communications and Campaigns at Development and Peace – Caritas Canada and travelled to Rome to participate in the activities of the Tienda Casa Común during the synod.
  • Mark Slatter, who is a theologian and Associate Professor at Saint Paul University.

Prior to the conference, the university will bestow its highest honour, the Doctorate Honoris Causa upon Cardinal Barreto. In addition to his service to the Church, Cardinal Barreto is being recognized for his commitment to human rights, the environment and peace.

Opening address, prayer and land acknowledgement

Introduction of Cardinal Pedro Barreto, SJ Presentation by Cardinal Barreto on the meaning of “The Synod on the Amazon: New Paths for the Church and for an Integral Ecology”

2:30 – 2:55 p.m.             


2:55 – 3:45 p.m.             

15-minute presentations by each panelist:

  • Heather Eaton: Has the Church, have we people of faith, helpfully captured what must be done (including in Canada) to address climate chaos and deforestation?
  • Kelly Di Domenico: How can Canadian Catholics and all people of good faith respond concretely to the outcomes of the synod and be in solidarity with the people of the Amazon?
  • Mark Slatter: What are the new theological insights arising from the Synod, in terms of missiology, what we might call “the new evangelization” and a new ethical, anti-colonial vision?

3:45-3:55 p.m.             

Cardinal Barreto will respond to the three panelists: What are Latin Americans expecting Canadians to change, so that it becomes easier for the people and the ecology of the Amazon Region to flourish?
