This Lent, with the approval and full support of the Bishops of Canada, dioceses across the country will partner with Development and Peace – Caritas Canada for the annual Share Lent campaign, culminating in the Solidarity Sunday collection on April 7, 2019. We continue to work closely with the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops in the ongoing renewal and revitalization of our work in promoting and protecting human dignity throughout the world in accordance with the teachings of our faith.
Our theme this year is Share the Journey. To Share the Journey is to walk alongside those who have been forced to flee their homes, and to see in them the face of Christ. “Before the challenges of contemporary movements of migration,” Pope Francis underlines for us, “the only reasonable response is one of solidarity and mercy.” Your Share Lent donation means our partner organizations can address the root causes of forced migration, support refugees living in camps, and help poor communities share what little they have.
Share Lent is our main source of funding for our solidarity work in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, and of our education and action programs here in Canada. When the Bishops of Canada founded Development and Peace, they chose Lent as the moment for the annual campaign because of its spiritual significance in the lives of the faithful. It is a time for prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
This Lent we are called to act with generosity and commitment, more important than ever. Your donation truly acquires life-giving power when it supports collective actions aimed at eliminating the causes of forced migration, while bringing about social justice.
