Fun times and deep thought at the National Youth Assembly

By Lea Mannari, Youth Programs Officer

From January 17 to 19, 2025, our dedicated young members of Development and Peace – Caritas Canada gathered in Montreal for the National Youth Assembly. Once again, this annual event provided a dynamic platform for discussion, learning, and mapping an exciting year full of promise.

Groundbreaking participation by students from Mother Teresa School

For the first time, the assembly had participation from high school students. Mariana and Kate from Mother Teresa School in London, Ont., energized the discussions and workshops with their enthusiasm and ideas. They expressed a strong desire to make a difference in their communities, reinforcing the impact of the assembly.

Their presence and the presentation on the D&P Schools program by Emily Lukasik, Youth Program Officer, highlighted how early engagement serves as a bridge to continued commitment.

Kate Bosman and Mariana Moreno Florez said, “This event was an incredible opportunity to share our visions and learn from one another. We felt welcomed and included in the collective dynamic. We’re leaving inspired and motivated.”

Youth ambassadors at the heart of our action

From L to R: Samuel John Medernach, Nicole Espinal Roa, Ikenna Kingsley Alozie and Abel Marius Oulai

Our four youth ambassadors, representing Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador, were present and shared their experiences during their first collective gathering.

The diversity of perspectives and the collaborative energy at this event show that youth is a powerful force for social change,” said Nicole, the youth ambassador for Ontario.

A rich and inspiring line-up

The assembly featured a varied and dynamic line-up, blending collaborative activities, strategic reflections and moments of conviviality. Highlights included interactive workshops like the Banana Split Game and the Orange Trading Game, which allowed participants to develop teamwork skills while exploring global issues.

The presentation on the Turn Debt into Hope campaign by campaigns officer Mayalène Lavigne-Martel was greatly appreciated, as was the overview of our work in the Global South provided by international programs coordinator Nagui Demian.

In addition, moments of relaxation, such as a dinner in downtown Montreal and reflective activities, strengthened the bonds between participants while creating spaces for sharing and unwinding.

Exciting prospects for 2025

This assembly laid the foundation for great initiatives in the year ahead. Participants committed to raising awareness in their communities and working together for even greater impact.

We are excited to see the projects that will emerge from this gathering and to continue supporting these young leaders in their initiatives.

See you in 2026 for another promising edition!
