Development and Peace – Caritas Canada at COP30: Fighting for Global Ecological Justice!
From November 10 to 21, 2025, a delegation from Development and Peace – Caritas Canada (DPCC) joined thousands of global leaders and civil society organizations in Belém, Brazil, to defend the rights of communities in the Global South and call for ambitious and just climate action.
The 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), to be held in Brazil in 2025, marks a turning point for global climate action—ten years after the Paris Agreement. With the 1.5°C warming limit already exceeded, current government commitments remain insufficient.
COP30 will be a moment of significant global mobilization, where public pressure will be key. Together, we can add our voices to the calls for more ambitious action on climate change and equality.
We will participate in COP30 alongside several partners—CIDSE, Caritas Internationalis, and Canadian and local partners—to demand courageous and united action for climate justice.
Key issues at COP30 include:

More ambitious national commitments through Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to reduce emissions by 2035.

Financing for loss and damage, where Canada's contribution remains limited and insufficient.

A just transition that protects communities in the Global South from the impacts of the extractive industry.
COP30 will be an opportunity to leverage our global Jubilee campaign, Turn Debt into Hope, by linking it directly to the issues of ecological debt and climate finance. Beyond the demands made in the petition, we will emphasize how a fair approach to debt can free up essential fiscal space for climate action, and how addressing the climate crisis can strengthen policy proposals related to debt advocacy.
In Canada, we will work with our Jubilee partners to influence Canada’s position on climate change. In Brazil, we will collaborate with our CIDSE partners to build bridges between grassroots mobilizations on the ground and negotiators inside, demonstrating that there is public pressure and will for action.
