Development and Peace — Caritas Canada is one of the leading Canadian international development NGOs and the official international solidarity organisation of the Canadian Catholic Church. The organisation supports local partners located in several countries of the Global South.

With a network of members across Canada, Development and Peace — Caritas Canada raises the awareness of Canadians about the causes of worldwide poverty and injustice and mobilizes Canadians around actions for change.

Summary

Reporting to the Director of the department, the animator is responsible for implementing the education, public awareness and fundraising programs, particularly the Share Lent campaign, with both the members and the broader public. The animator represents the Organization in a given region and is the basic link between the Organization and its network of members. The animator’s mandate includes recruitment, animation (facilitation), training, and accompanying the members in his or her region.

Requirements

Main functions
  • To recruit, train, facilitate and accompany members and leaders in the region for which he or she is responsible;
  • To support members and leaders in order to strengthen their capacities to:
    • organize the movement,
    • plan activities,
    • recruit new members from among diverse publics, including youth, young adults and cultural communities,
    • build public awareness, and
    • raise funds;
  • To support members in representing Development and Peace to the public, to social movements, to the media and to the Diocesan Churches in his or her region;
  • To coordinate training sessions and other Diocesan and Inter-Diocesan activities;
  • To facilitate and spearhead the various Development and Peace campaigns and programs in his/her region: engaging youth and cultural communities; fundraising, educating and raising awareness of Canadian public about international solidarity.
  • To maintain a relationship with the Bishops, with the local Church, and with solidarity and social change groups active in his or her region;
  • To contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of the In-Canada Programs Department’s work plan, as well as in the melding and integration of activities involving popular education and advocacy, communications, youth programs and fundraising;
  • To assess the social situation and that of the local Church in order to ensure that his or her intervention strategies conform to the realities of the region;
  • To develop his or her plan of action in relation to the Department’s plan of action and the realities of the situation in his or her region;
  • To see to the circulation of information between his or her territory and the In-Canada Programs Department overall, as well as to the organization’s other Departments;
  • To see to that his or her regional office operates effectively, to coordinate regional office support staff, interns and volunteers, and to manage the budget available to the region
Academic background
  • University degree in education, social work (community development/ community work), international development or the equivalent
Languages
  • Bilinguism: Written and oral proficiency in French and English (mandatory)
Software
  • Mastery of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Familiarity with social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) (asset)
Experience
  • Four years relevant experience in a multicultural setting (animation/education/community development)
  • Experience in fundraising (asset)
  • Experience working with volunteers and youth
  • Very good knowledge of the Catholic Church and its commitments in the fields of social justice and international development
Specific knowledge
  • Ability to drive a car (valid driving licence)
Availability
  • Available to travel in Canada and abroad
  • Available for evening and weekend work
