Walls broke, wills did not: an update from Haiti

Haiti’s Civil Protection Directorate reports that the quake has claimed over 2,200 lives, injured more than 12,250 people and destroyed or damaged nearly 130,000 houses. UNICEF also notes that scores of water supply and healthcare facilities and hundreds of schools have been damaged.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reports that about 800,000 people need vital relief assistance and that there is a heightened the risk of another wave of COVID-19 infections. This has prompted the UN to issue an emergency appeal for US $187.3 million.

Haiti needs our support

At 8:29 a.m. on Saturday, August 14, 2021, a powerful magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Haiti’s Tiburon Peninsula, about 150 kilometres west of the capital, Port-au-Prince. Much of the damage occurred in the towns of Jérémie and Les Cayes. The force of the earthquake was felt across most of the country, particularly in the West Department.
